Thank You Henry Winkler

I first learned about Henry Winkler when he was the Fonz on Happy Days.  I loved his moments on that show and his guest appearances as the Fonz on other shows I watched like Joanie loves Chachi, Mork & Mindy, and Laverne & Shirley.  He made me smile and always brightened my day, plus I'm sure there was a little imitating the Fonz during playtime.

I lost track of him for a few years, but always loved catching the Fonz on re-runs.  During this time, I developed an appreciation for the work of Adam Sandler and his characters on Saturday Night Live.  I was super happy when he began making movies and beyond excited to see "the Fonz" in Waterboy.  Since then, I have enjoyed spotting Henry Winkler in other movies or TV show appearances.

Then, I discovered that Henry Winkler is also an author.  I started reading the Hank Zipzer series and fell in love with "the Fonz" all over again.  Only this time, I was given a glimpse into an amazing insightful real human being.  Well, Hank is not "real," he is fictional, but reading the Hank Zipzer series gives insight into that thought process of Henry Winkler.  I could not get enough of Hank. When I finished the series, I began reading all I could about Henry Winkler including his autobiography, "I've Never Met an Idiot on the River: Reflections on Family, Photography, and Fly-fishing."  That book gave me what I think may have been my best glimpse into the reality of Henry Winkler.

My family has been attending Planet Comic-Con in Kansas City for the past few years.  This year, for various reasons, my son and are were not planning to attend with my daughter and husband.  Then, I saw that Henry Winkler was going to be there and I almost changed my mind.  In fact, I think I might have if it made even a modicum of sense for me.  Thankfully, my daughter offered to get an autograph for me, which she did and I sent a card for her to give Henry Winkler.  I decided to create a fly-fishing scene.  I don't know his reaction to the card itself, but I hear his reaction to even receiving an envelope with a card in it was so gracious and kind.

"The repetition of it, the sound of the water, I find it to be totally draining. Anything that bothers you is completely washed from your body. I see fly-fishing as a washing machine for your brain. My technique is still ugly as sin. But somehow I get the fish."    Henry Winkler

"I live by two words: tenacity and gratitude."--Henry Winkler  When I read this quote, I thought, "me too."  I too try to live my life with tenacity and gratitude.  In fact, I've spent this past six years focusing on gratitude and how giving thanks everyday makes your world a better place.  ""Give thanks in all circumstances" I Thess 5:18a.  There is always something for which to give thanks.  Thank you Henry Winkler for reminding me of that and for being even more kind and gracious in real life than you appear in books, movies, and TV.  I am sorry I missed the opportunity to meet you in person, but I'm thankful you were so amazing and gracious to my daughter.

"The arts help complete a person. I truly believe that."--Henry Winkler
